Ancient cultures made art in practical ways. Daily objects were not just utensils that served a function, they were creations of art that served a practical use. Many held magical powers, protections, animal and ancestral spirits.
Some of my favorite pieces, that have been created over the years, have been functional art. The chicken house is one example. We made it all out of recycled wood and parts from various old fences and doors. I wanted to make it "pretty" and protect our flock from foxes and other predators. So out came my oil paints and inspired by a native symbol of balance, I happily transformed the hen house into art.
Art can be simple, daily, every day. Art is a frame of mind. Art is how we view the world and how we interact with it. Art occurs when we come from our heart.
I have been creating masks and puppets for over 20 years now. Some have been made for a specific theatre piece, some for community groups, children's workshops, some for shamanic ceremonies, some have been commissioned by individuals ... and some have been created for pure art sake.
Each one seems to have a life of its own, it dictates how it is made. I often feel I am simply the midwife of each creation assisting in the process.
Some folks for whom I have created Masks & Puppets: The British Museum, Andrew Ashmore & Associates, Triple Shadow Theater Company, Penzamba, Rough Coast Community Arts.
